The NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament, known as March Madness, began its first round on Thursday, drawing widespread attention to college basketball action across multiple U.S. venues.
The New York City Fire Department used the occasion for a safety reminder on X, tying into the sport's terminology. "It's March Madness — and blocking shots is part of the game. But blocking a fire hydrant? That's never OK," the FDNY posted on March 21, 2024.[1]
The department stressed that parking vehicles next to fire hydrants is illegal in New York City and can impede firefighters' ability to connect hoses quickly during emergencies. "Parking on fire hydrants is ILLEGAL in New York City and can delay first responders when seconds matter most," the post added.[1]
In parallel, the ongoing "Thank You, NYPD" campaign seeks public appreciation for New York Police Department officers through shared videos.
St. John's University head men's basketball coach Rick Pitino, a Hall of Fame coach hired by the program in November 2023, contributed a message posted to Madison Square Garden's Instagram account on Friday.[2]
"I want to give a sincere thanks to the NYPD officers who do such an incredible job to keep our city safe," Pitino said. "Thank you so much."[2]
The NCAA tournament continues with second-round games over the weekend, following the 68-team single-elimination format that culminates in the Final Four on April 5 and championship on April 7 at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.[3]
