Darrell Green, a 64-year-old Pro Football Hall of Fame cornerback who played his entire 20-year NFL career with the Washington Redskins from 1983 to 2002, is participating in trials for the U.S. men's flag football national team this week in Chula Vista, California.[1][2]

Green, selected by Washington in the first round (28th overall) of the 1983 NFL Draft out of Texas A&M-Kingsville, recorded 54 career interceptions, including six returned for touchdowns. He was a seven-time Pro Bowl selection and won two Super Bowls (1988, 1992) before retiring and being inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2008.[2][3]

Green qualified for the trials through USA Football's digital combine. "He’s later in his career than the other trials participants, but his testing results were impressive," said Callie Brownson, USA Football’s senior director of high performance and national teams. "Our coaches and staff felt he deserved a closer look."[1]

The trials, held at the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Training Center, feature around 100 male and female athletes vying for national team consideration. Among the competitors are former WNBA player Loryn Goodwin and ex-Florida State guard O’Mariah Gordon.[1]

Green aims for an invitation to training camp next month and a potential roster spot on the 2026 U.S. national team, which will compete at the IFAF Flag World Championships in Germany during the summer. Flag football is set to debut as an Olympic sport at the 2028 Los Angeles Games.[1][4]

"I’m going to give it my best and I’ll walk away with my head up, either way," Green said.[1]

The U.S. men's flag football team has won gold at six of the past seven IFAF World Championships since 2010 and remains the dominant force in the sport.[1]
