Bettis backs Rodgers delay, urges Steelers draft fixes
Pittsburgh Steelers Hall of Famer Jerome Bettis voiced support for Aaron Rodgers amid the quarterback's ongoing free agency wait, acknowledging potential player frustration while stressing limited alternatives at the position. The Steelers signed the then-41-year-old Rodgers last season to address mediocre quarterback play, reaching the playoffs under Mike Tomlin with a winning record. Bettis highlighted benefits of the delay for younger quarterbacks to gain reps.
Bettis told Fox News Digital that Rodgers warrants extra latitude given the team's thin quarterback depth. "When you have no alternative, then you have no choice," he said. He noted players value continuity but recognize Rodgers as a team player who fits the culture.
The Steelers maintained consistent quarterback performance over two decades, but other areas suffered, including the running game and receivers, according to Bettis. Rodgers returns for a potential 22nd NFL season in Pittsburgh, following a playoff run highlighted by a 29-24 win over the Detroit Lions on Dec. 21, 2025, and a game against the Baltimore Ravens on Jan. 4, 2026.
Bettis partners with The Athletic's NFL Draft guide "The Beast" to inform fans ahead of the draft in Pittsburgh. He emphasized needs for offensive line, running back, receivers and defensive help to bolster support around the quarterback.
